In LADY BIRD, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

In many ways, the struggle of many mother/daughter relationships. Loved the spunk and determination of Lady Bird. Growing up - friendship - moving on - making and losing friends. The moment of her independence, for me, came when she said she wanted to go to the prom.

I loved this movie--fresh, poignant & the word that feels most right: wise. A coming of age without good guys or bad guys--a complex slice of life. Every time I made a mental category for someone--the girlfriend of her brother, the nuns, her men--the movie complicated and opened it up.

What a surprise to see a film with a touching, truly human and humane and very accurate theme with no plot I couldn't follow. The only inaccuracy is that she probably never would have been admitted to any ivy league school after having been suspended from high school.

Cinema Club is 4/4 this year!
We loved this film. As parents ofa 21 year old, we just experienced all of this down to the gay first boyfriend, player, 2nd boyfriend, theatre, and applying to schools in NY. The only difference is we didn't refinance our house to let her go. So accurate emotionally!

Pitch perfect in every detail. One of my favorite components was timing/pacing - film editing - quick movement between scenes in aid of the abrupt shifts in adolescent life, and moods. It complemented acting, the narrative time of senior year and the characters. Brilliant movement between hilarious and sober vignettes. Everything served everything else in the totality of the film.
