Based on the unbelievable, but true events, I, TONYA is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, a mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother, LaVona Golden, and an original screenplay by Steven Rogers, Craig Gillespie’s I, TONYA is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding’s life and career in all of its unchecked––and checkered––glory.

When I arrived and saw we were going to see a movie about Tonya Harding, I thought "really . . ." Wow! What a fabulous surprise exceeding all expectations. Well done--insightful and interesting. The use of humor about such sad situations made it watchable. I found myself, especially at the sentencing, feeling such empathy. Great film choice!

I didn't much want to see the film because of the over-the-top coverage and tawdriness of the story. But this film just drew me in and kept me on the edge of my seat even though I knew the ending. the domestic violence issues raised by the film are hard to see but need the spotlight. Allison Janney was amazing.

One of the few “laugh out loud” movies that also deals with the dark elements of domestic abuse, class distinctions and missed expectations. Overall, I think they did a good job blending all these elements. I think Margot Robbie did a very good job despite being as physically different from Tonya Harding as I can imagine. Bobby Cannavale is a gem of a comedic actor.

Very funny. Very disturbing. The film is merciless in its mockery of Tonya’s white trash milieu, but behind the sleazy mustache is a complicated story of class in America. The unflinching depiction of domestic abuse makes it easier to understand Tonya’s complicity and victimhood, and why talent was not enough to get her a happy ending.

While I sympathize with Tonya Harding’s rough background, I didn’t necessarily walk away with more empathy for her. I found her to be the ultimate victim—always blaming others or things (e.g., skates, laces) for her adversities. Life is hard. Life is unfair. And Tonya had some very real hardships and unfairness—some by careless circumstances, some by choice. It’s how one responds to them that sets one apart—Tonya responded by blaming others instead of looking within. We can all have these moments, but Tonya had too many of them.

A totally engaging film even though we know the ending. The ironic telling captured the full scope of ludicrous fantastic yet real to life absurdity of this story - and the tragedy of Tonya's childhood and career. The music fueled the pacing and frenetic feel of hurdling toward an inevitable disaster. A great juxtaposition of the artistic beauty of skating and her violent sick reality.
