CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, the new film by Luca Guadagnino, is a sensual and transcendent tale of first love, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman. It’s the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy, and Elio Perlman, a precocious 17- year-old American-Italian boy, spends his days in his family’s 17th century villa transcribing and playing classical music, reading, and flirting with his friend Marzia. Elio enjoys a close relationship with his father, an eminent professor specializing in Greco-Roman culture, and his mother Annella, a translator, who favor him with the fruits of high culture in a setting that overflows with natural delights. While Elio’s sophistication and intellectual gifts suggest he is already a fully-fledged adult, there is much that yet remains innocent and unformed about him, particularly about matters of the heart. One day, Oliver, a charming American scholar working on his doctorate, arrives as the annual summer intern tasked with helping Elio’s father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of the setting, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.

A film of self discovery set in a gorgeous place. The relationship between Elio and Oliver was beautiful and would be a part of their lives forever. The father's words seemed to come alive in the final scene.

The story of Elio of Oliver one summer in the 1980s was deeply affecting and resonated with me in the most profound and articulate way. I cannot praise this film enough -- it is inescapably beautiful and heartbreaking in the most endearing and uplifting way. Armee Hammer and Timothee Chalamet's chemistry drive this story and ensure that Elio and Oliver stay with you long after the credits have ended.

Gorgeous scenery. Certainly captured the angst of a teenage boy. The acting and music are excellent. I’m not sure whether the parents were too understanding & therefore unrealistic…even for academics. To me the pathos was our knowledge of the era means the chances of AIDS infecting both or one of them is haunting. It was indeed a picture of the innocence of the times—without the prejudice.
