Claus Räfle’s gripping docudrama traces the stories of four real-life survivors who learned to hide in plain sight. Moving between cinemas, cafés and safe houses, they dodged Nazi officials and a dense network of spies and informants. Yet their prudence was at odds with their youthful recklessness, prompting them to join the resistance, forge passports, or pose as Aryan war widows. Masterfully weaving these story threads together, THE INVISIBLES is a testament to the resourcefulness, willpower and sheer chance needed to survive against incredible odds.

The director was masterful in maintaining the continuity of the storylines while incorporating many different characters. It will be hard for me to hear a knock at my door in the same way as before I saw this film.

Should be compulsory viewing! Suspenseful from the first knock on the door, but still documentary. It had so much to say about oppression, the systematic accumulation of isolating measures, the necessary cooperation of the oppressed and the youthful optimism necessary to survive.

As an avid reader of bios and memoirs, I love the way this movie was written--as four vignettes, different people, their situations, and their means of surviving their ordeals. It was not just informative, but suspenseful. The combination of survivor interview, the actors, and old film footage was great.

As a descendant of German-American Jews, it was a hard film to watch. I'm always most touched by the heroism of the saviors. The film's story of Jews surviving in Berlin is one I never knew. It's a very important one to depict.

I came warily to Cinema Club today--"another biopic", "Another Holocaust movie." Those approaches & topic--how to combine in yet another way to say something new cinematically? I was blown away with admiration over how this film found a new story and a new way. Having real footage interspersed with reenactments SO tightly grounded the story so much better than the usual biopic with real footage in the credits. Well done.

The insertion of news reel footage between scene changes was a good touch to bring the audience into the milieu of the times, and also emphasize how life went on while they were hiding.

Brilliant technique of blending the survivors’ narrations with the acted sequences - it powerfully took us into their amazing stories, a touching tribute to the survivors spirit to stay alive and incredible tribute to the Germans who cared for them at their own peril. A powerful reminder of the world-altering effect of retaining humanity in war.
